Guided or Self-Guided Snowmobile Rental: Which to Choose?

Guided tour or self-guided snowmobile rental? Safety, route, the unexpected and budget: compare both options before booking in the Outaouais.

When you want to go snowmobiling, two options come up: join a tour with a guide, or rent a machine and head out on your own. Both have their fans. The right choice depends mainly on your experience, your knowledge of the area and what you expect from the day.

The essentials
All Biffrentals Aventure snowmobile tours are guided. A guided tour suits the vast majority of visitors (beginners, families, couples, groups); self-guided rental is for experienced riders who already know the trail network.

Self-guided rental: who is it for?

Self-guided rental suits experienced snowmobilers who already know the trail network, can read a trail map and feel able to handle the unexpected on their own: a breakdown, a snowmobile stuck in deep snow, worsening weather. You also need to plan the route, the fuel stops and the return times.

The guided tour: who is it for?

The guided tour is for everyone else, which means the vast majority of visitors: beginners, families, couples on a getaway, groups and even experienced snowmobilers discovering a new region. If you're starting from scratch, our beginner's guide walks you through a first outing.

The two options compared

  • Experience required: recommended without a guide; none with a guide.
  • Route: to plan yourself without a guide; prepared by the guide on a tour.
  • Breakdown or getting stuck: yours to handle alone without a guide; handled by the guide.
  • Conditions of the day: to check yourself without a guide; the guide adapts the route.
  • Viewpoints: depends on your research without a guide; the guide knows the best stops.
  • Mental load: high without a guide; none on a tour, you just enjoy.

The real advantages of a guide

  • Safety. The guide knows the road crossings, the tricky passages and the areas to avoid depending on snow cover.
  • Time saved. No pointless detours or U-turns for lack of landmarks: every minute is spent riding.
  • Peace of mind. Breakdown, fuel, a snowmobile stuck in a snowbank: someone takes care of it.
  • Progress. A guide corrects your position and gives you the right reflexes; you come back a better rider than you left.
  • Local experience. They know the history of the area, the wildlife and the panoramas that maps don't show.
